Food for Finicky Finches

Finch BlendNyjer attracts finches of all kinds. Its high-oil content is an excellent energy source for active birds and is best used in our specially-designed finch feeders. It is important to keep the food fresh for our picky little eaters. Once seed starts to dry out and become stale, finches will turn up their beaks for fresher forage. Store your Nyjer in an airtight container for a longer shelf life and buy in quantities that will be used up in a few weeks. Available in 5lb and 10lb bags.

Finch Blend contains their favourite two seeds - Nyjer seed & finely chopped sunflower chips. This works great in a finch feeder! Available in 5lb, 10lb & 20lb bags.

Safflower

Safflower - A Special Addition and the Problem Solver

Safflower is a white (or whitish) seed in a hard shell.  Many people use this seed to deter squirrels and blackbirds, such as grackles and European Starlings.  It is believed that grackles and starlings have bills that are not built for cracking open this hard shells.  Squirrels are thought not to like the bitter taste.  Word of warning thought regarding chipmunks - they love it.  A baffle on a pole can help prevent them from getting up to your feeders. Safflower is a favourite of Cardinals, House Finches and Doves,

white millet

Millet for Groundfeeders

There are two types of millet - white and red.  White millet is preferred over red millet for blends  Blends that include millet are our No Mess Blend, (no shells just all food and no mess on the ground), and Deluxe Blend.

Millet is a shiny round seed.  It is loved by ground-feeding birds - Dark-eyed Juncos in the winter will love to see this on the ground or in trays.  Sparrows such as chipping sparrows, white-crowned sparrows and white-throated sparrows will forage on the ground for millet but will also come to a feeder for their favourite seed.  Doves will eat millet whole whereas sparrows will crack it open.
